We are all so blessed to be able to assist the children in exploring the Word of God. On September 28, we focused on the story of the Tower of Babel, to be found in Genesis 11 verses 1 through 9. Starting off with identifying ways that we honor one another, we discussed when honor is undeserved, and how God is deserving of all honor and praise. Our memory verse focuses on this reality, Jeremiah 10:6, "No one is like you, O Lord; you are great, and your name is mighty in power."
Getting back to the bible story, the children explored how the descendants of Noah came to be on the plains of Shinar (which is supposed to be Babylonia; can anyone tell us where Babylonia would be on our maps today?) There they settled down (please ask your child what a nomad is because that is what the descendants of Noah were before arriving at the plain of Shinar.) The people built a city and then a tower. Please check out verse 4 which tells us why the people were building the tower. In order to deal with the people's pride, God gives them different languages, and thus the use of the word "babel" which sounds like the word in Hebrew meaning confused.
All of us contend at some point with how the world wants us to believe that we are so strong, so powerful, so rich that we don't need to pay attention to God and honor Him. God is worthy of our honor and praise. In the Evensong session of Sunday school, we all spent a little time reading Psalm 93 all at once, not necessarily in unison, as we walked around listening to music as a form of praise of our mighty God.
